Turoa Ski Runs & Trails
With a base altitude of 1,600m (5249 ft) and a summit altitude of 2,322m (7618 ft) Turoa offers a vertical drop of 722m (2368 ft) which is the most vertical offered in New Zealand and is all classified as high alpine. Offering such a high elevation and with the sheer size of the mountain it doesn’t take long for the resort of become a sea of white ready for winter.
With only 11% of the terrain dedicated to beginners Turoa is seen locally to be more of an intermediate to advance resort however it’s a great place to begin and to get your footing on your choice of equipment. The Ski school takes their lessons in both the Alpine Meadow beginner area and Wintergarden. These areas are exclusive to beginners which gives people more comfort knowing they have a place to learn.
32% of the terrain is set out for intermediates and this terrain is quite varied to keep all riders across the intermediate spectrum happy and challenged all day. Turoa’s elevation means crisp blue runs for most of the day and the natural carving of the volcano means the terrain is interesting and will keep intermediate riders coming back day after day finding new and existing areas to explore.
The people who created Turoa Ski Field must be Advanced and Expert riders because there is simply heaps of terrain for any strong rider to enjoy. Sitting high in the alpine means the terrain is wild and with the south east basin offering some extreme rock chutes its certainly going to test even the most advanced riders. A unique part of Turoa is that they have long drawn out and complicated black runs going from the top of the resort at 2322m all the way to the bottom of the resort at 1600m. That 722m of black run vertical, a very very unique find at any resort world-wide.
