Mt Hutt Ski Runs & Trails

With a base altitude of 1403m (5249 ft) and a summit altitude of 2086m (7618 ft) Mt Hutt offers a vertical drop of 683m (2368 ft) which means Mt Hutt has the highest lifted elevation of any resort in the South Island and a leg burning vertical of 683m is it possible to ride this from top to bottom, not something that is possible at most resorts.

Mt Hutt is a great resort to learn how to ride and is probably the first resort many locals to the South Island first skied. 25% of the terrain is set aside as green runs for newbies, kids and beginners and all of this can be found all above the base village area. With two surface lifts and an incredible ski school with world class instructors first timers will fall in love with skiing and riding. When feeling more confident riders can jump on the simply named Quad Chair to find wide and expertly groomed green runs like Highway 72 and Inside Leg which wind their way back down to the base area.

A whopping 45% of the resort is rated blue for intermediate riders, and its most likely going to take days to explore it all. Intermediate riders will mostly spend majority of their day riding the Summit six pack chair which takes riders straight up to the summit elevation of 2086m, that means good snow. Morning Glory, Chair bowl and International Express are the best blue runs making their way from the summit down to the base area and is a 400m decent. The grooming team does an exceptional job of keeping these runs crisp and fast and on a bluebird day you can zoom down or slow down and soak in the exceptional views of the plains far below.

Advanced and Expert riders will be at home in Mt Hutt as 30% of the resort is set aside from riders looking for a challenge. That’s over 100 hectares of black and double black diamond runs (red and black runs for the kiwi and European riders).

Coming off the Summit Six chair to the right will take riders down the Virgin Mile run which has a number of expert runs peeling off to the right hand side of the face but for those who make it all the way to the end will need to choose if they want to go back to the base or off to Rakaia Saddle Chutes. Bob’s Knob or Elephant wull get you back to the base and the chair lifts or the Rakaia Saddle Chutes (wide open double black bowls) connects back to the car parks where riders can take a shuttle bus back to base.

Expert riders who are good enough to go through gate entry terrain will find a plethora of options heading left as they get off the Summit Six chair. Dog Leg, Chute 3 and Whistle Bowl are challenging expert runs which connect back up to the blue runs which take you to the base of the Summit Six, those looking for a harder challenge should keep going over to the South Face where 1st Chute, Main Chute, Saddle Face and Jan’s face will challenge even the most skilled rider. These connect down into Museli bowl which takes riders to the bottom of Towers Triple chair. This whole trek will take riders from the summit to the lowest elevation of the resort. A whooping 683m of expert runs.

Mt Hutt Terrain Parks

Mt Hutt has a great terrain park offering which can be found across 4 different terrain parks. The progression parks full of smaller and medium features can be found by heading left off the Quad Chair where small rollers, hips, jumps, boxes and entry level rails will keep everyone entertained.

Riders who are at home in the terrain park can find a number of large features beside the progression park and then they will find the largest features up off the side of the Summit Six chair. The higher elevation of the terrain park being up at over 1800m means the park crew have better snow to work with and the terrain parks are around for a lot longer.
